This is dog is occasionally referred to as the Miniature Spitz dog or European Spitz. In its native land of Germany it is the smallest member of the German Spitz group. The Pomeranian is also sometimes called the German Spitz in Germany.

In Germany the Pomeranian was bred to its present size in Pomeranian during the nineteenth century. Its ancestors were of the Spitz type and larger. Among the Pomeranian’s ancestors are the Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, Chow Chow and other northern European breeds. It is possible that the Pomeranian was reduced in size from the large white sled dog that originated in Iceland and Lapland. Exact time of origin is unknown. Queen Victoria of England took a great liking to the Pomeranian and helped to increase its popularity in her palace in 1888.

Other Spitz types were used as herding dogs and sled pullers. The Pomeranian, however, has always been a lapdog. It came to America in the late nineteenth century and was shown in the miscellaneous class in 1892 by the AKC. American Kennel Club recognized the Pomeranian officially in 1900. Since that time he has become quite popular as a pampered little pet.

Personality

The Pomeranian is sometimes a little too courageous for its own good. He serves well as an alarm dog, but its barking sometimes becomes a habit that needs to be discouraged. The Pomeranian has one primary purpose and that is to please its owners. It sometimes shies away from children that play too rough. The Pomeranian may not be a good choice for a household with children or as a child’s pet. They socialize easily with cats and other small family pets.

The Pomeranian is definitely one of those big dogs in a little package. They usually won’t back down from a much larger dog. This aggressiveness can be self-destructive as obviously a bigger dog could make mince meat of a tiny Pomeranian.

The Pomeranian is eager to learn and is devoted to its family. He is affectionate and has a very loving nature toward its own family. He is delightful and is always ready for a quick game with those he loves.

The Pomeranian responds to command if they are consistently given and he is rewarded with edible treats or kind words. The Pomeranian has a tendency to become somewhat of a “spoiled brat.” When his bad habits surface he may simply ignore commands to “act better.” He is rarely seen in agility trials; however, the Pomeranian does well in obedience trials.

Appearance

A Pomeranian stands about 7 to 8 inches tall and weighs from 3 to 7 pounds. The tiny Pomeranian has a short body, straight legs and well-balanced overall appearance. He has erect ears and a fox like expression that gives this little dog an alert expression. Pigmentation of the nose, lips and eyelids are always dark, usually black.

The Pomeranian’s coat is double and profuse. Acceptable colors are red, orange, cream and sable, black, brown and blue.

Grooming the Pomeranian

The coat of a Pomeranian is made up of an undercoat and an outer coat. The undercoat is soft and fluffy. The outer coat is fairly long, straight and harsh and covers the entire body.

There is an abundance of coat around the neck and the fore part of the shoulders and chest that forms a frill that extends over the shoulder. The forequarters are well feathered and the thighs and hind legs are well feathered to the hocks.

The Pomeranian requires regular attention to keep it clean and attractive. Thorough brushing once a week is required to keep the coat in good condition.

You will need a slicker/pin brush, medium-tooth metal comb, scissors and cotton buds.

Brush against the lie of the coat to give the Pomeranian its round pompom appearance. Brush first with the slicker/pin brush working from the top of the head, layering the hair as you go and be sure you reach the skin level. Then work through the coat with the comb to remove any tangles left behind from the brushing.

You might consider using a dry bath on your Pomeranian’s coat when in full coat. When the Pomeranian is in full coat, use a suitable pH-alkaline-balanced shampoo and rinse well.

Generally, dogs are very clean animals – they won’t soil close to where they eat, or where they sleep. But living in a house is unnatural for an animal whose instincts would be to roam wherever she wants to go, so you will have to help her learn where and when she can relieve herself.

It is essential that you form good toilet habits for your dog as early on as possible. Trying to break the habit of a dog is quite difficult and it can be very frustrating. You need to use guidance and encouragement to help the pet. Animal behaviorists have some helpful tips that you can use to help with the housebreaking of your pet.

Believe it or not, dogs are sanitary creatures. If a dog does soil accidentally in the wrong place, it is likely that it will be far from his dog dish, at least six to ten feet. This is true for the place where the dog sleeps as well. But, unless you find a good place for her to go and train her in that manner, the rest of your house is okay to them.

The process for housebreaking a dog is the same if he is a puppy or an adult dog new to your home. You’ll need to take him outside every few hours and also 30 minutes after he eats. Take your pet to the designated bathroom spot. Stay with the pet until she goes, and then praise her when she does. If she does not go, bring her back inside and try again in fifteen minutes. Watch her though. If the dog starts sniffing and circling take them out right away as this is a sign that she is about to go. Pay attention to her signs and take her out. Soon, she will relate to going outside to going to the bathroom.

Some dogs are housebroken much faster than others. Some dog’s personality will cause her to go one way or the other. But, if you take her outside at the right time, it will go smoother. A puppy of less than four months old will need to go out during the night. Older puppies can hold it that long. A dog that cries to be let out has an urgent need. Get up and take her out, she needs every chance to succeed that she can get. Positive reinforcement is necessary for success.

How you treat accidents will affect your dog’s overall learning curve. If you catch your dog going in the act, distract her with a clap or call her name. Take her outside calmly at that time and praise her for finishing outside. Clean up any accident that you find on the floor. If the dog approaches during this time, ignore her. Don’t talk to or punish her at this point. The worst thing that you can do is to yell at her or physically punish her. This will cause her to fear you and to not bond as well to you. She won’t connect it to the accident at all. Ignoring her is the best course of action here.

Have a great day!

Are you thinking of adopting a puppy as your pet? Well, if you are, take some time to read through this because taking care of a puppy isn’t as easy as ABC. Being a responsible owner, you need to ensure the well-being of the puppy in terms of its health and living environment. Does it dawn on you that your new comer need time to familiarize with the new surrounding and all the unfamiliar faces? Hence, to make it easier and better for your puppy and yourself, puppy house training is extremely essential in carrying out.

How much do you know about puppy house training? Well, it means making your puppy feels at home with no separation anxiety and disruptive behaviors. The training includes potty training, familiarize and socialize well with the family members as well as knowing what can be done and what cannot be done even without your supervision.

Let us be realistic, your puppy cannot be 24 hours within your sight. You may have to work, do your marketing, meet up with friends and other social activities. So how can you prevent your puppy from messing up the house and ruin your furniture? Fortunately, the starting point of puppy house training isn’t that hard to do. You have to find your puppy a room in which it can be confined in when you are not around. Yes, you may feel sorry for your puppy but it is all for its own good. Besides, your pet being a puppy will spend most of its time sleeping. It is important to place its food, water and toys in the room so that it will not feel hungry and thirsty, and can have things to entertain it.

Set schedules to take your puppy out for walks, preferably after every meals is particularly important in puppy house training. Make sure your puppy can come into contact with neighbors or even other animals so as to train it to be more socialized. If your dog is not well trained in this area may become unsociable, and it will make it very difficult for you to predict its behavior and reaction when you are out with it. In such case, you may have to spend more money in hiring a professional trainer to solve your dog’s problems.

Puppy house training involves everyone in your family. The training is not a one man and one dog issue as your puppy needs to learn to obey commands even when you are not around. So your family needs to get involved in training the puppy to make it work.

Puppy house training can be a lot of fun and it build up your bonding with your puppy. Anyway, with very young puppies, your crucial training areas are more on the food routine and potty. No matter how much you have achieved from training your pet, the most important things to note is to love it so that it can grow up happily and healthily.

Being a responsible dog owner, it is very important that you trained your dog well. A trained dog can be both good for you as well as your canine friend. It is always best to start training early and the good news is there are in fact many puppies training tips which you can learn.

Are you desperate to have a well behaved indoor dog? If so, house training a dog is probably at the top of your to do list. I am going to give you some helpful information here then leave a link at the bottom to a great resource for helping you learn about house training a dog.

The biggest part of house training a dog is teaching him or her not to go to the bathroom on the floor. Another thing you want to do when house training a dog is stop it from chewing up your shoes and furniture. This goes against the nature of a dog so you have to overcome the dogs instincts. The good news is that with a little love and affection, your dog will completely change what its instincts tell it to do just to make you happy.

The first thing you will want to do when house training a dog is teach it where to go to the bathroom. There are 3 basic types of potty training you can choose. First, you can teach your dog to use a mat in your house. This option is very popular for people that don’t have easy access to an outdoor area where a dog can go to the bathroom or if your dog has to spend a long time alone while you are at work. If your dog spends a lot of time in a kennel, you can teach him or her to go in one corner of the kennel. This is very similar to training a dog to use a mat, but a little messier. This is probably the least popular method of dog training because it is messier and most people don’t have a large kennel area to keep their dogs in. The last method of house training your dog is to teach him or here to go to a door and let you know that he or she has to go the bathroom and needs to be taken out. This is probably the most prevalent method of potty training a dog.

Some other things house training can do for you is to stop chewing things up, reduce barking, teach the dog where it is supposed to go and where it is supposed to stay away from, and a host of other behavior changes to make you life better.

If are ready to have the perfect pet, head over to ObedienceTraining4Dogs.info and learn how easy house training a dog can be. You can also find some great information on my House Training a Dog article.

House Training A Puppy – Most Splendid Ways To Make Him Learn

Puppies are lovable and are a favorite option when a family intends to adopt a new pet. They can easily adapt to the family environment. Unlike other types of pet; dogs can’t take care of themselves. Training a pup is not a daunting task. The kind of training completely depends on the breeder or kennel and from where you have adopted the pup. On the other hand dogs that are adopted from shelter homes are either partially trained or not trained at all. Therefore house training a puppy becomes important.

The first approach towards puppy training is to get acquainted and comfortable with your new pet. The most essential rule is, if you don’t find your puppy doing what is trained then don’t punish him. Always praise him when things go right. Avoid creating a situation where you end up saying him “No”, when he is caught using wrong area. There are various ways to housebreak a pet. To start with, try placing down penetrated pads or paper and persuade your puppy to use them for going to the toilet. Scented pads attract your pet to use them. Another most popular way of puppy training involves placing the puppy in a cage or crate. Most pet owners fail to understand an important benefit of crate training. Apart from stopping your pup from messing up, it helps him learn when the urge to defecate or urinate occurs, thereby encouraging him to hold it. Using specific verbal communication, including phrases like “Do it “,”Potty” etc. So, if you expect that the “House Training a Puppy” program goes quickly, regardless of the ways you use, invest a lot of time for your pet.

Potty Training Puppies – Best Approaches, Tips & Techniques

Potty training puppies is one of the most important jobs dog owners have. It’s an essential skill your dog should learn very early in life, especially if you want your own life as its owner to be a lot less stressful.

Of course, the first thing you should realize before training is that your puppy is a baby. It doesn’t have full control over its own bowel movements, and it will need time and practice before it learns when and where to do its business.

In addition, your puppy’s learning capability is determined by its breed – some dog breeds are just naturally easier to potty train than others. On average, it may take around two to three weeks before your puppy is fully potty-trained.

Here’s a list of the essential guidelines for puppy potty training:

1. Start early – Potty training should start the moment you get your puppy home. When you let your dog out into the house, confine it to areas with washable flooring and don’t let it near carpeted rooms. During the instances that you can’t watch your puppy, keep it in a confined area or large box at all times, without exception.

2. Proper feeding – Feeding must take place at the same times every day. Developing a routine is essential here. You should typically give your puppy its food and water at least four hours before bedtime and then withdraw its water bowl two hours before bedtime. Feed your puppy dry food in order to keep its stools dry.

3. Regular potty walks – Set a regular schedule for taking your puppy outside. The recommended times are: first thing in the morning, ten to fifteen minutes after every meal or drink, every time it wakes from a long nap or ends an active play session, and last thing at night. Do not play with your puppy until it has defecated. If there is no action after ten minutes take the puppy back inside. Wait around ten minutes and then take it out again to do its business.

4. Punishment – Never, ever scold or punish your puppy if you don’t catch it in the act. Dogs have no way of knowing what you’re angry at them for unless you’re actually scolding them while they’re doing it. If you see your puppy starting to urinate or defecate in the house, say “No!”, pick it up, and take it out to finish its business. Never ye
1000
ll at your puppy or get angry at it for these accidents. Instead, accept some of the blame; you should have been watching your dog better.

5. Rewards – Every time your puppy poops in the proper place, praise it using an approving tone, petting, and gestures, and reward it with a little playtime together. Praise always, always works better than any form of punishment.

6. Cleanliness – Keep your puppy’s box or living area clean by removing its stools everyday. Your dog dislikes stepping in them as much as you do.

Puppy potty training doesn’t have to be hard, or messy, or a constant daily struggle. Don’t view the activity as a tedious, menial obligation or the downside of owning a puppy.

Instead, look at it as one of the first bonding experiences between you and your pet. Just a slight shift in your mindset will make the whole experience a lot easier and happier, resulting in a healthier and more loving relationship with your canine companion.

No Dog training means more to most new puppy owners than that first important lesson: Not in the House!

Teaching your Dog to go to the toilet outside the home, not in it, usually starts between six and eight weeks of age. Dogs as young as four weeks old, have been started on the house training, but at such a young age, a puppy is unlikely to have enough muscle control.

Like any dog training, the trainer’s patience is as important as the dog’s temperament. ‘Sit’, ’stay’ and other behaviours can often be learned in a few days. ‘Potty’ training can take weeks – sometimes as short as two, often a month or more.

As with other learned behaviours, you should look for signs of the impending action, then enforce and direct them with a voice command followed by praise. In this case the technique works to the trainer’s advantage, since all dogs will naturally go to the toilet. The trick is to get them to do it when and where you want!

Look for signs such as circling or squatting, then pick up the pup, say ‘outside’ and hurry outside. The puppy may circle some more, but will often squat immediately. As it begins, say “quickly” (or some other phrase) in a clear, firm (but not angry) voice. Wait until the puppy finished and give lots of praise.

You won’t always be able to catch the puppy about to begin, but don’t become angry or impatient when the dog goes to the toilet indoors. It takes time for the dog to learn to tell you it’s time to ‘go outside’. It also takes time for the muscles needed to control bladder and bowels to develop.

Young dogs need to go to the toilet every 2-3 hours, on average. If you haven’t spotted evacuation behaviour within that time, take the dog outside anyway. Issue the command ‘quickly” and wait. At first, usually, the dog will have no clue what you want.

Again, even when outside, it helps to wait and watch for the desired behaviour then issue the command. That helps the dog associate the command with the behaviour. If the dog hasn’t gone after a few minutes and a few ‘quickly’ commands, take it back inside for an hour. Of course, if you spot the pre-toilet behaviour in less time, go outside again immediately.

Dogs have a surprising ability to quickly learn what their ‘alpha’ (the leader of the pack) wants. This is almost always accomplished by associating a verbal command with behaviour, followed by praise. Punishment is usually counter-productive, and nowhere more so than in toilet training. Never rub a dog’s nose in waste.

Paper and/or crate training is preferred by some. A pup can be trained to go on a newspaper, or on one of the chemically treated puppy pads designed for the purpose. Some small breeds that live all day in the home may not need to go outside at all.

The technique has a couple of down sides however. Unlike cats, dogs will rarely go in a perfumed litter box. Newspapers (even with the top layer removed after the dog goes) will eventually create an unpleasant smell in the house.

Also, long before the odour becomes unattractive to humans, dogs can smell their own distinctive aroma. They don’t find it unattractive – quite the opposite. And that’s the problem.

Dogs that are paper trained will often prefer to eliminate indoors. Sometimes they’ll miss the paper by only an inch, creating a mess to clean up.

Once the odour is in the carpet, the dog will often seek that spot out as its proper ‘place to go’. This makes training the dog to go to the toilet outside even more difficult. Best to suffer a few accidents than to create a hard-to-overcome habit.

Patience, praise and consistency are the keys to any dog training. Elimination training is the first test for you and your dog.
