dog potty training – Potty training an adult dog.?

I have a male four year old small mixed dog. I moved in October to a house that has a lot of carpet. In the past I had very little. I had a friend come and visit in November with her small male dog. I have a dog door and she said her dog knew how to use it. We left the dog alone for the day while we went out. When we returned her dog had lifted his leg all over my house. I cleaned it but since then my dog continues to try and mark all over the house. I am very frustrated to say the least. Everyday I come home he has marked yet again. I am to the point that I am considering getting rid of my dog. It pain me to do it but I can not live with a dog that uses the house to mark. HELPPPPPP.....
